Virginia McNeice
We are very sad to announce that Virginia McNeice, 82, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. Jini was a prolific and regionally-renowned landscape artist who drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the countryside she loved. Her work is in private collections, regional galleries, local hospitals and businesses. Jini’s art moved many people and even inspired some to begin their own artistic journey. Her artist friends valued her knowledge and insight, as she welcomed them into her studio and her life. As celebrated as she was in the art world, Jini accepted accolades with humility and grace. A quotation on her studio wall reads, “It’s the process, not the product.” She was one of the founding members of the Valley Artisans’ Market and the Village Store Coop in Cambridge. Jini enjoyed being a vital member of the Cambridge community, Hubbard Hall, Battenkill Chorale, and the Agricultural Stewardship Association. Her calendar was always full.
Call for artists
FIRE AND ICE. That’s the focus of our theme show this year, scheduled in August. Interested artists are invited to submit works portraying their interpretation of fire and ice in any media. Watch this page for more info on when to submit your work. We look forward to seeing your creations!
We are open!
After a long break to clean, paint, mop and dust – plus upgrade some lighting and repair some leaks from many hard Northeast winters – we are open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am-5 pm. Come and see new work, meet new members and experience a fresher, brighter VAM!
Open 7 days!
We are open seven days a week until New Year’s Eve. Come and see all that local artists have created with their hearts and hands. Hope to see you soon!
New website
VAM member Carolyn Kibbe has a new website: http://ckibbe.com. Her homepage features a picture of the month so you can check out her new work even when VAM isn’t open!
Member wins award
Congratulations to VAM member Barbara Sarvis who won “The Most Luminous Landscape” at The Vermont Pastel Society’s Annual Member Show for her painting, Pullman Farm.
Woodworker retiring
We are sad to say that woodworker Tom Hutchinson is retiring from Valley Artisans Market. If you love his wooden toys, bowls, clocks and pens, get in before the end of the month. Once June is gone, so it Tom! Happy Retirement, Tom. You will be missed!
Congratulations to local senior
Every year VAM gives a $100 art scholarship to an outstandingly talented high school senior who plans to continue to study art in college. Students come from a different town each year and are chosen by the head of that school’s art department. This year’s recipient is Cheyanne Stunger from the Argyle Central School. Cheyanne comes with a glowing recommendation from Visual Arts Department Head Rick. L. Fleury.
“Over the last four years in high school, Cheyanne has compiled the strongest and most creative portfolio within the visual arts curriculum that I have witnessed the past forty years of teaching,” Fleury wrote. “Cheyanne represents the true caliber (scholar and artistic talent), the professional stature as a student, that colleges, universities, art schools and the work force are looking for.”
Cheyanne will be attending Bucknell University next fall majoring in fine art and minoring in computer science. One of Cheyanne’s paintings will be on display in our gallery front window later this spring.
Schenectady Today show
Two of our member artists — Mary Lou Strode and Bliss McIntosh — brought work from the Market to the Schenectady Today show. If you have a few minutes, take a look at the beautiful arts and fine crafts that we have in at Valley Artisan, going strong since 1981.
Happy Anniversary to us!
Three things that happened in 1981: Ronald Reagan became president; Lady Di married Prince Charles; Valley Artisans Market was born. Celebrate the latter on March 18, 2-5 p.m. at our 37th anniversary party. The party will be held at Valley Artisans Market and the public is welcome. Come meet our member artists and enjoy art, refreshments and yummy snacks.
